Following a firework celebration on Parker’s Piece the previous night, the morning dawned warm and bright and by 10am spectators were lining the now-pedestrianised streets, keen to secure the best view. A colourful caravan of floats, which paraded through the city, got the crowds cheering and waving ahead of the arrival of the peloton, which set off from Gonville Place at 12.15pm, passing through the city centre via Regent Street and Sidney Street before turning left at the Round Church.
The riders then travelled past St John’s, Trinity and King’s Colleges along a bunting-strewn King’s Parade, before leaving the city via Trumpington Road and continuing through Great Shelford and Saffron Walden, en route to The Mall, London.
