This August, slip away to Grantchester Meadows at dusk to enjoy what has become one of Cambridge’s most popular summer events – and rightly so.
Movies on the Meadows, part of Cambridge Film Festival, invites film fans to enjoy a spectrum of movies – usually a big blockbuster, a family film and a classic flick – in a unique open-air setting.
This year’s event takes place over the August bank holiday weekend: 29 and 30 August and is being billed as the biggest and best yet. Turn up early and bag the best picnic spot, pick up a radio and tune in to whichever of the three giant inflatable screens you wish to watch.

Saturday 29 August: 2001: A Space Odyssey; Paddington; The Theory of Everything
Sunday 30 August: Back To The Future; Brief Encounter; The Railway Children
Monday 31 August: Far From The Madding Crowd; All That Heaven Allows; Letter From An Unknown Woman
Attendees are welcome to bring their own food and drink (don’t forget a rug or chairs, and warm jumpers!), while plenty of tasties will be available to buy from local street food vendors parked around the edge of the meadows. These will include Steak and Honour, Planet of the Crepes and Caffe Mobile. Plus, there will be a licensed bar.
Then lay back and watch the opening credits roll under a sky full of stars.
As well as the main features, Monday evening will see the return of Riverside Romance by Punt. Classic films including Jean Renoir’s masterpiece Partie De Campagne will be projected onto riverside screens as you punt by, with picnic hampers provided by Fine & Country.
Start time: 8pm approx (gates open 6pm). Parking is available. Tickets go on sale next week.
