The mighty King’s College Chapel – centre of Cambridge and an iconic landmark known the world-over – is 500 years old this year. To celebrate its quincentenary, a series of magnificent concerts are planned to take place from 9-11 October.
Epiphany Through Music is a contemporary music festival, hosted at King’s College Chapel, whose varied list of events offers audiences a special opportunity to personally experience music that has influenced the world, all amidst an incomparable setting which has provided the inspiration for epiphanic moments of discovery in the pursuit of new knowledge for the last 500 years.
The concerts will feature internationally esteemed guests, including members of the Philharmonia Orchestra, Markus Stockhausen, John Butt and George Benjamin and The Wallace Collection brass ensemble, together with the university’s own remarkable musicians, choirs and ensembles.
The main event of the festival is ‘Within Those Radiances …’, taking place at 9.30pm on 10 October with Markus Stockhausen. Set to be recorded for posterity, this concert should be a once in a lifetime experience.
John Wallace, internationally renowned trumpeter and leader of The Wallace Collection, says: “This festival has been devised to offer audiences the opportunity to gain a personal insight to the music which continues to have such an impact on our changing world.
“The collective performances of ‘Within Those Radiances …’ is of particular importance in this respect, as it fully encapsulates the diverse senses of freedom that music can offer the listener, and viewer. The crowd-funding recording project is therefore vital in helping preserve this legacy for generations to come. It’s so exciting to be able to offer everyone the chance to be directly involved in the creation of these recordings through their financial support – they are literally becoming curators of a moment of musical history.”
