Strawberry Fair has been launching the summer season in Cambridge for over 40 years. A celebration of the city’s vibrancy and creativity, the Fair is run entirely by volunteers – affectionately called Strawberry Fairies – and typically attracts over 30,000 visitors throughout the day, with plenty to appeal to all ages. Along with a host of music and workshops, this year’s ‘Love Our Planet’ theme weaves through the Fair – highlighting the green credentials of the city.
Set in the leafy, riverside location of Midsummer Common, the site is packed to the gunnels with community stalls, mouth-watering street food and sunny spots in which to sit and relax in front of music and performances from well over 100 groups – both local and from further afield. With multiple stages dotted around the Fair, you can expect to discover a vast array of music to suit all tastes – seek out the Radegunds for indie rock, Reno & Rome for power-pop, James White & The Wild for a mix of country, bluegrass and rock, and For The Hornets for punchy punk metal.
In the Arts Area, from noon until 6pm, meet independent artists Pete Treglown and Richard Downes, and find out about the fantastic campaigns being run by organisations such as Greenpeace, Little Blue Dot in collaboration with Friends of the River Cambs, and Friends of the Earth. Cambridge Art Salon will be hosting a crafty cafe with mocktails, cakes, teas and coffees. There will be workshops throughout the day, including a singalong with the Tuneless Choir leader Lulu Agate and even a hula hooping workshop.
A series of wild card acts will perform at the Spoken Word Tent, with Wild Strawberries Open Mic, plus special guests billed from 12pm to 7pm, followed by the iconic Strawberry Slam in association with Hammer & Tongue Cambridge. The Strawberry Jam will close the night – a portion of the evening when pretty much anything goes!
Over at the Kid’s Park, youngsters will be thoroughly entertained by a medley of sensational acts, spanning dance and acrobatics, to storytelling, Sanskrit dance and good old-fashioned tomfoolery from Fudge the Clown.
