Local artist and master’s student Joshua Obichere shines a light on black identity in portraiture in this latest exhibition at Cambridge Artworks

Coming up at Cambridge Artworks this week, art educator and Cambridge master’s student, Joshua Obichere, invites the viewer to explore a visual study on blackness, carried out in collaboration with local Year 12 art students. Skin Deep: Blackness in Portraiture features a selection of self-portraits created by Joshua, which have been inspired and informed by the ideas and sketches of ten non-black art and photography students on the subject of black representation.
The exhibition is the outcome of a research project that encouraged A-level art students to challenge their perceptions of blackness, and then shine a new light on what blackness can look like in portraiture. “Delving into perception and the way we see race, this exhibition will challenge and inspire, but also empower the viewer to think about the importance of cultural representation,” says Joshua.
