Cambridge boasts a fantastic selection of romantic dining spots, each offering a perfect setting for an evening out. Here are some of our top recommendations
Ah, romance – that mysterious force that drives us to book candlelit tables, sip wine we can’t pronounce and gaze longingly into our partner’s eyes (while secretly trying to nab the last bite of dessert). In Cambridge, love isn’t just reserved for punting on the River Cam or whispering sweet nothings under the Bridge of Sighs – it spills over onto the dining table, where restaurants offer an irresistible combination of charm, intimacy and indulgence.
Whether you’re wooing a new flame, celebrating years of partnership or simply hoping to impress someone with your impeccable taste in eateries, Cambridge
has a seat for you. From Michelin star marvels to hidden gems with roaring fireplaces and riverside views, there’s no shortage of romantic backdrops for your amorous escapades.
But fear not – you won’t need to don formal wear or recite Shakespeare to enjoy these spots (unless that’s your thing, of course). This guide is for the lovers who like their dining with a side of laughter and a dollop of deliciousness. So grab your date – or that friend who always picks the best dishes – and prepare for an evening of good food, great company and maybe even a little romance.

French restaurant Amelie in Ben’s Yard is known for its superb contemporary food and signature flammekueche (a savoury flatbread that’s a cross between a pizza and a tart). “Our special Valentine’s Day opening will feature a candlelit dinner, live entertainment with a pianist and a special menu created by head chef Rory Landells,” says Alex Crepy, who co-owns the restaurant with his father Regis. Kick off with a cocktail or two – a negroni or classic gin martini. Menu highlights include roasted cauliflower with tahini and pomegranate, sea trout with Stuntney Estate sautéed potatoes and champagne and brown shrimp butter. To finish, the dessert trolley offers choices including tarte au chocolat, light, airy éclairs and chef’s popular Basque cheesecake.
