Old Buckenham Hall, a home-from-home in the Suffolk countryside, builds confidence and character
Since 1862, Old Buckenham Hall (OBH) has been more than just a leading prep school – it’s a place where children can truly flourish. Set in 85 acres of beautiful countryside, OBH provides flexible boarding that puts character, curiosity and wellbeing at the centre of the experience.
Free from mobile phones and social media, children aged 2 to 13 thrive in a safe, nurturing environment, which is just 45 minutes from Cambridge. OBH offers the structure and independence of boarding, with the comfort of weekends at home.
Boarding is at the heart of OBH life. Over 80 students live across three welcoming houses, Lodge, Merton and Spero, and the school offers full, weekly and flexible boarding to suit the needs of each family.
Boarders enjoy comfortable dormitories and vibrant common rooms, with a pastoral care team who know each student individually. The sense of belonging pupils gain from boarding lays a strong foundation for future emotional and social wellbeing.
Engaging evening activities help to enrich students’ lives. Weekends are also a highlight, filled with exciting trips such as beach visits, London adventures and creative in-school experiences.

Wellbeing is at the core of OBH life. Pupils are surrounded by a pastoral care team who know them as individuals, and the sense of belonging they gain from boarding lays a strong foundation for emotional and social wellbeing
On every other Saturday, students begin with a focused morning of academic lessons, followed by an exciting programme of guest lectures, sports fixtures and creative workshops. These events give children the chance to explore new interests and develop skills beyond the classroom. Whether through horse riding, clay pigeon shooting, rugby, hockey, or drama, every child is encouraged to embrace new challenges, discover their passions and grow in confidence.
Outdoor learning is fundamental to the OBH ethos. In the school’s expansive parkland children climb trees, explore nature and learn by doing. At the OBH Farm, children plant vegetables, care for chickens and bees and develop practical skills, responsibility and teamwork.
Free from the pressures of modern life and grounded in deep-rooted traditions, OBH provides a supportive environment for each student. Families often comment on the transformative impact boarding at OBH has on their children’s confidence, resilience and independence.
