Introducing Claire Petrie, the new Head of Prep at Kimbolton School, Cambridgeshire
This September, Kimbolton Prep School warmly welcomed Claire Petrie as its new Head of Prep. With a passion for education and a wealth of experience, Claire has embraced her new role with enthusiasm, bringing her inspiring vision to the heart of the school.
Kimbolton Prep School, located a ten-minute walk from the Senior School in the stunning grounds of Kimbolton Castle, provides a nurturing environment for children aged 4 to 11. Known for its strong pastoral care, engaging curriculum, and wide-ranging co-curricular opportunities, the school encourages pupils to grow in confidence and independence while striving for academic and personal excellence. From Forest School adventures to drama productions, pupils benefit from a rich blend of activities designed to develop well-rounded individuals.
Before joining Kimbolton, Claire served as Deputy Head of Prep at Wellingborough School, where she was instrumental in launching innovative initiatives such as the Endeavour Award. This programme encouraged pupils to excel in areas beyond academics, fostering resilience, leadership, and creativity—qualities she continues to champion at Kimbolton.
Claire’s journey into education began during her teenage years, inspired by her mother’s dedication to creating opportunities for young people through sport. Her coaching experiences in the UK, America, and Australia ignited a passion for teaching, which she pursued through studies at Loughborough University.
Reflecting on her transition from Deputy to Headship, Claire highlights the importance of authenticity and pupil-centred leadership. “Every decision must come back to one question: What is best for the pupils?” she explains. This ethos underpins her approach at Kimbolton Prep School, where she is committed to tailoring education to individual needs and fostering a culture of inclusion, curiosity, and excellence.
An advocate for embracing technology in education, Claire sees Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a transformative tool. At Kimbolton, she is leading efforts to integrate AI in a meaningful way, enhancing learning experiences and preparing pupils for the digital age.
“It’s about using technology to support development while ensuring children cultivate critical thinking and digital discernment,” she says.
Away from the classroom, Claire is deeply invested in the school’s stunning grounds at Kimbolton Castle. These historic and natural surroundings provide a unique backdrop for hands-on learning, encouraging creativity and well-being among pupils and staff alike.
Claire is also pursuing a Master’s in Education and Leadership Management, a programme that informs her strategies for staff development and school improvement. “Promoting lifelong learning among staff directly benefits our pupils,” she notes, reflecting her commitment to building a thriving school community.
Outside of work, Claire enjoys family life, cooking, and planning holidays—moments that keep her energised for her role leading the next generation of learners at Kimbolton Prep School.
