Become engrossed by The Institute of Continuing Education’s Summer Programme this coming season
For many, summer – when the holidays begin – means that little bit of extra space and free time. It’s a chance to catch up on what you’ve been missing or meaning to get round to, and, if you’ve always longed to learn a language or nail new skills, now’s the perfect moment.
With ways to pick up the threads of education often feeling out of reach – for those who want to dip in and out of learning alongside daily life – the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Continuing Education offers the ideal solution.
This year, their Summer Programme returns after a two-year hiatus. Suited to adults of all ages and walks of life, a diverse variety of courses are on offer – tallying an impressive 104 one-week programmes available.
Students are given free rein on what they choose with the ability to mix and match options across four weeks, creating a truly personalised programme of study over one month. Whether science is your bag or literature is more up your street, topics range from ‘essentials of astronomy’ and ‘the art of looking slowly’ to ‘social media’s global challenge’ and ‘writing non-fiction’. All courses are taught by leading academics in their field.
Claire Henry of the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Continuing Education explains: “Everyone’s looking forward to welcoming students back to the Summer Programme; there’s a real buzz about the place. Whether you’re 18 or 80, it’s an amazing opportunity to experience student life in Cambridge.”
“There’s something for everyone,” says Claire. “Whether you’re an 18-year old student building your CV, a mid-career professional looking for new knowledge and ideas, or a retiree wanting to re-engage with education by returning to past passions or trying something new, the Summer Programme is for you.”
Worried about missing out on the summer sun? Lessons venture well beyond the classroom, with opportunities to head out and enjoy Cambridge’s art and architecture or immerse yourself in the city’s many green spaces. The university town’s abundance of museums and galleries will be on-hand to help you with your learning.
The Summer Programme is also a great place to meet like-minded city residents. “It’s a fabulous way to explore new ideas and new knowledge, become part of a supportive and enquiring community, and develop new connections and enduring friendships,” says Claire.
