The celebrations will take the form of a 1920s-themed Gala Dinner held at Wood Green’s Godmsnchester Centre and aims to honour its staff, volunteers and many supporters of the charity down the years.
Wood Green, The Animals Charity was established in London in 1924 by Louisa Snow who was concerned at the large number of abandoned and injured animals on the streets of London following the First World War. Today it helps over 5,000 animals each year find new homes – from cats and dogs to sheep and chickens. They now have centres in London, Heydon and Godmanchester.
The glittering champagne reception on 13 November will be followed by a four-course dinner and silent auction to help raise vital funds. An exhibition of photos and memorabilia will also be on display, charting Wood Green’s successes through the decades. Then, in true 1920s style, guests can dance through ‘til midnight to the sound of a live swing band.
Star of The Bill and darling of the dancefloor Ali Bastian, herself an ardent dog lover (pictured above with her cockerpoo Molly), will open the event and showcase the number of ‘Happy Birthday’ messages that have been sent to Wood Green from celebrity well-wishers. Molly may also be making a guest appearance.
“We are absolutely delighted to have Ali as our host for the evening,” commented Wood Green CEO Clive Byles. “This is a very special event for us, so to be supported by someone who is a successful star of stage and screen – and also a huge animal lover – is a real bonus to an evening line-up which promises to be spectacular.”
Clive added: “We still have some seats available for the dinner and can promise a wonderful evening for anyone looking to join in our celebration. Every penny we raise on the night will make such a difference to what we are able to deliver for animals that are abandoned and in need.”
