This October, take your seats for the opening concert of the Cambridge Classical Concert Series at Cambridge Corn Exchange on 17 October.
Fabien Gabel conducts and the soloist is Natasha Paremski, who will display her astonishing virtuosic skills to Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.
Schumann’s passionate Manfred Overture and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, flowing with warmth and optimism, are also on the bill, plus short new compositions composed by music students from Cambridge.
The Cambridge Classical Concert Series has become increasingly popular in recent years; regularly playing to packed houses and attracting newcomers as well as traditional concert goers. Tickets from £28.50 (£12.50 students and under 16s).
Freddy Kempf
Then, on 28 October, award-winning pianist Freddy Kempf performs his favourite Beethoven, Schubert and Tchaikovsky sonatas with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He takes over from Julian Lloyd Webber as Artist in Residence throughout the 2014/15 series. He comments:
“I’m tremendously excited and delighted to have been appointed Artist in Residence at Cambridge Corn Exchange. The venue is a pleasure to play in, and particularly so as it lies in the heart of one of the UK’s prime historical and educational cities – how fitting to finally become a part of it and to be able to work with and hopefully inspire local music students.”
English Touring Opera
Cambridge gets its annual visit from the never-knowingly upstaged ETO this month as it puts on two great operas.
On 22 October, the comedy director behind One Man, Two Guvnors gets behind Haydn’s Life on the Moon – one of his most popular and accessible operas. A kind of 18th century science fiction, it sees a would-be astronomer dupe an old miser into believing he has flown to the moon.
Then, on 23 and 24 October, be dazzled by Handel’s Ottone, a romantic story taking place in royal courts, at sea and in dramatic caves. Expect lavish costumes and breathtaking arias, sung in English. The operas start at 7.30pm; tickets from £12, with student tickets and multiple-buy options on offer.
