Well, now’s your chance to see the real thing right here in Cambridge as our local team, the Romsey Town Rollerbillies host their final home game of the season on Saturday 25 October.
It’s been a great season so far for the Rollerbillies, who’ll be looking to continue their winning streak against this weekend’s opponents, Belfast Roller Derby.
In case you’re not familiar with roller derby, which, by the way, happens to be one of the fastest growing sports in the world, it’s a full contact game played on quad roller skates on an oval track. The aim of the game is for the jammer (identified by a star on her helmet), to hustle through a pack of ‘blockers’ – picking up a point for her team for every blocker from the opposing team she passes. The blockers’ job meanwhile, is to impede her progress, through throwing hip and shoulder hits and forming defensive walls – as well as helping their own jammer out with offensive plays. With a punky vibe, excellent outfits and huge hits, roller derby is a fantastic spectator sport, and well worth checking out. The week’s game takes place at Kelsey Kerridge sports centre, and doors open at 2.30pm. You’ll get two for the price of one as the Rollerbillies B Team, the Blockabillies, will also be facing off against Northampton’s Vendetta Vixens’ Lost Girls.
