Get swept up in the art of the oceans
From stormy waves to tranquil beaches; marine adventures to mysterious shipwrecks, the sea has served as a constant but ever-changing muse for artists of all kinds throughout history.
It was in the 16th century though, thanks to Dutch and Flemish painters such as Hendrick Vroom, Jan Porcellis, the Willem van de Veldes and Ludolf Backhuysen, that seascapes in the art world really became became popularised.
In Making Waves, which runs at the Fitzwilliam Museum from 14 February to 21 May, you can explore works by these artists and more, enjoying rarely seen drawings and watercolours from across the museum’s collection. One highlight includes the bequest of Sir Bruce Ingram, that depict tempestuous seas, naval battles, serene harbours and bustling shores with fishermen selling their catch.
