Jazz icon Dame Evelyn Glennie is to give local young musicians tips for the top
A national treasure, Dame Evelyn Glennie is used to breaking new ground as the first person to successfully sustain a career as a solo percussionist. Now she’s giving local young musicians the chance to take first steps in front of an audience at a special masterclass at Fitzwilliam College Auditorium.
Five musicians will be selected for the What’s Your Voice event, which is part of Cambridge Jazz Festival, and Millers Music will help select the young talent.
Dame Evelyn is a double Grammy and Bafta award-winner and had a leading role in the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The percussion pioneer has more than 30 CDs to her name.
To be in with a chance of taking the stage with her on 19 November, you must be aged 16 to 22, be Grade 6 or above in one or more of the drums, marimba, vibraphone and/or another percussion instrument and play jazz, demonstrating a high level of improvisational ability. Applicants need to submit a one minute video of themselves playing a jazz piece of their choice with their full name, age, instruments played, grade and contact number. You will need to be available on 22 October for a short interview… and of course on 19 November for the masterclass.
