In a new book from the Campaign for Real Ale, beer writer Roger Protz details the stories of four historic breweries across East Anglia. The Family Brewers of Britain charts three centuries of British brewing, examining the past, present and prospective future of some of our best and most fascinating family brewers. Among the East Anglian breweries featured in the book is Elgood’s, a brewery in Wisbech. Dating from 1795 – and run by the Elgood family since 1878 – the brewery occupies a gorgeous Georgian building overlooking the River Nene, and its gardens are home to some of the oldest trees in the region. You’ll also find in-depth features and interviews with McMullen’s, Adnams, and Wells & Co breweries in the book, so you can be sure to uncover some intriguing anecdotes. Roger had this to say about the book: “our family brewers are often overlooked flagbearers for real ale and have fascinating stories to tell. These four included breweries have centuries of history under their belts, and it was a delight to research and compile their stories in this book. I look forward to readers coming along on this journey and learning more about their favourite beers.” To find out more about the book, and to order a copy, head to the CAMRA Books website: shop1.camra.org.uk
