Early on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning this week, students united to record a video, set to Swift’s current hit single, Shake It Off. It features groups dancing and singing along to the track at various locations throughout the city, including the Garret Hostel Bridge, on punts, outside the Wren Library, by the fountain in Trinity’s Great Court and ending with a splash by the rope swing in Grantchester.
The message at the end of the clip reads:
‘Dear Taylor, we hope you’ve enjoyed this video. Please consider coming to Trinity College, Cambridge May Ball on the 15th of June 2015. It would mean so much to us. Check out #TaylorAtTrinity on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter! XOXO’
Second year student Harriet Gordon was the brains behind the campaign. She told Cambridge Edition:
“The idea came about when we were all sitting in the library, skiving off our work, listening to Taylor’s new album 1989. She’s very interactive with her fans so we decided to send her a photo of us with a sign saying ‘I love 1989’. But we wanted to make it bigger.
“So, I came up with the idea of doing a massive video involving people from college. I made a Facebook group and added people, who then added more people. I asked people to sign up for times they were available to film a section and went from there!
“All the people in the video are students at Trinity College. The dancer is Rebecca Green, a super talented member of a Cambridge dance group, and the boys are members of Trinity rugby team.
“Trinity seems to really, really love Taylor – I was overwhelmed by how many people wanted to make this video for her to show our dedication! It was one of the most fun experiences I’ve had in Cambridge. We did it earlier this week and finished all the filming in two and a half days, which was a bit of an organisational nightmare but luckily it all came together really well. We got a few odd looks from tourists but as it was filmed in the college, most of it was kept pretty secret until we released the video.
“I think the funniest bits are when you’re watching it and you just notice one person in the background doing some absolutely ridiculous dancing – although this might just be for me because I’ve watched it so many times!”
