The Extraordinary Objects exhibition showcases a collection of British artists overflowing with sarcasm and irony, celebrating unique British humour
Our humour is what makes Britain great; we aren’t afraid to laugh at ourselves with self-deprecating distain or use our quick wit and wordplay to really jazz up a statement. These artists are no exception.
The latest exhibition from Extraordinary Objects Gallery celebrates these quintessentially British artists, proudly showcasing their sarcasm and irony.
Flying the flag of British self-deprecation are acclaimed artists Grayson Perry, Banksy, Harland Miller, Gilbert & George and The Connor Brothers. You will also catch a glimpse of emerging talents like Tim Fishlock and Alma Singer.
Where imagery and wordplay meet wit and deadpan delivery, British creatives shine. Artist commentary on politics, culture and the mundanity of everyday life create the controversial, unsubtle and occasionally offensive works we love. This exhibition serves as a representation of our not-so-great nation.
The Connor Brothers provide insight: “whereas Americans tend to think that they are The Greatest Nation on Earth, and bang on about it constantly, here in Britain we have a more realistic impression of our homeland. We could perhaps lay claim to being the most mediocre nation on earth. Distinctly average. Not the worse. Better than some. Mid-ranking. We don’t stone anyone to death, but the food isn’t great. School shootings are rare, but it drizzles a lot. Thankfully, knowing you’re a little bit shit, means you can joke about it.”
On display are works through a plethora of mediums including original paintings and drawings, interactive wall art, sculpture and limited-edition prints. Get a feel for the works below:
