Probably the best-known love story of all, Romeo and Juliet has been breaking hearts for nearly 500 years. A chance meeting between two young lovers reignites old rivalries between Verona’s most ancient families, setting in motion a chain of events which end in literature’s most famous tragedy. Surrounding the epynomous pair is a cast of unforgettable satelite characters including the vivacious, headstrong and troubled Mercutio, seductive Lady Capulet and Juliet’s nurse. It was written between 1591-95 and became an instant hit, enjoying many performances during Shakespeare’s lifetime.
This new adaptation by Shakepseare’s Globe arrives at Cambridge Arts Theatre on 30 June, until 4 July, directed by Dominic Dromgoole and Tim Hoare. Together they have created a stripped down version of a classic tale which celebrates all its high romance, humour and drama anew.
Starts 7.45pm (pre-show talk at 6.30pm, June 30), tickets from £15.
