The bright lights and colour returns
It’s time to head out, look up and marvel at the whizz, bang, pop of fireworks night.
Cambridge boasts one of the biggest free bonfire night events in the region on Midsummer Common, turning the sky into a colourful kaleidoscope that’s not to be missed.
There are food stalls and more on site, or you can eat, drink and make your way to the event via the river or on foot.
One of Cambridge’s most popular events – with a fun fair on site – the city council has kept it free for 30 years thanks to the support of local businesses.
Tom Cranmer, of Pains Fireworks, who are designing this year’s spectacle, said: “Our vision is to deliver a variety of beautiful effects, coupled with intense and co-ordinated colours that show great artistry and imagination throughout.”
Anna Smith, Executive Councillor of Communities at the council, said: “The bonfire night display and fun fair has always been a highlight of the year for me, and I know this is the case for many other local residents.”
The first rocket will be launched at 7pm on 5 November, followed by the lighting of the bonfire. Thousands of people attend, so leave early and walk, cycle or take public transport if you can. Donations of at least £3 are encouraged, which can be made by texting the word BANG to 70500.
One inspired option to get there is to experience the firework show from the river in true Cambridge style. A boat trip departs from The Plough in Fen Ditton at 6pm (£21.50). You could pick up some fish and chips for the journey up the river and get in a round of drinks for the evening’s spectacular show.
Before and after the display, nearby drinks shop Thirsty, at Mitcham’s Corner, will have flavour fusion van Kerief Catering outside. The pop-up creates delicious homemade South African and Jamaican food for you to chow down on with a drink before heading to the display. From 6 to 9pm at Thirsty Cambridge.
And, if you can’t wait, you can start your fireworks experience early on 3 November, with Whoosh, at The Missing Sock, at Stow-cum-Quy. Expect electronic music with an impressive line-up of DJs, plus crackling fireworks. It’s from 7pm to 2am, £27.75.
