Putting their own tongue-in-cheek spin on the great tradition of British brass bands, with a bit of New Orleans swagger thrown in, Hackney Colliery Band know exactly how to get a party started. Front runners in the current brass revival which has seen groups like the Hot 8 Brass Band, Brass Funkeys and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble come to the fore, the group was founded in 2008 in the borough which gave them their name.
Featuring trumpets, trombones, saxes, sousaphone and marching percussion, the group serve up deliciously unexpected covers of artists including Kanye West, The Prodigy and Toto, all delivered with an energy so infectious you can’t help but groove along with them.
See them on 21 May at Cambridge Junction. Tickets are £16.
