Top tips for the August Bank Holiday
Don’t forget! This weekend is a long one, with the next Bank Holiday just around the corner… here’s a few things to get your teeth into, and in some cases, quite literally.
1. Summer Lates and Flavours of the World
Ely Markets has the whole weekend covered. First up on the Friday, 24 August, there’s another of their ever-popular Summer Lates, with street food and live music.
“We’ve organised a mini-festival on Friday afternoon,” explains Julia Davis, from Ely Markets.
“The fun kicks off at 4pm in the Market Place, till 9.30pm and our Summer Lates are laid back and relaxed, so soak up the last of the summer weather, buy some delicious food and enjoy great live music. Enjoy a beer from Poppy Up Bar or try the latest flavours from Ely Gin; and, if you’re feeling adventurous, get one of Wild Girl Henna’s beautiful henna tattoo designs.”
Then, on Saturday through to Monday, the regular market traders in Ely will be joined by the Flavours of the World market from 8.30am to 3.30pm. Everything from North African food and French patisserie, to gorgeous olives and Baltic amber jewellery. “Whether it’s Mexican churros, Spanish paella, German currywurst or exotic sweets, we know you’ll find something you can’t resist.
2. Cambridge Cocktail Weekend
Back for its third outing, the event will once again transform Cambridge Corn Exchange into a lively drinking den teeming with top tipples to try and fun workshops and masterclasses to get stuck into. Boutique local producers Cranes Drinks, Pinkster Gin and Cambridge Distillery will be there, while some of the world’s best bartenders will be flying in to take part in the World Flair Association Grand Slam World Championship.
La Raza will host a speed cocktail-making competition and Cambridge Gin Laboratory’s pop-up allows you to blend botanicals to create your perfect gin, which you can take home.
The event runs from 24 to 6 August, £13.50 for evening slots, £7 for afternoon sessions.

3. Movies on the Meadows
Slip away to Grantchester at dusk to enjoy Movies on the Meadows. A prelude to the Cambridge Film Festival, returning in October, the event showcases movies in an open-air setting on the banks of the River Cam.
Guests are encouraged to bring picnics while they’re treated to the magic of the silver screen, creating a magical atmosphere.
From 24 to 27 August, films include The Greatest Showman, Avengers: Infinity War, Ready Player One and Isle of Dogs. There are also family gems like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Paddington 2.
Tickets are £16 for adults, £6 per child.
4. Steak & Honour @ Pint Shop
Two glorious Cambridge faves combine when Steak & Honour take over the Green Eggs – the egg-cellent outdoor grilling machines – at the Pint Shop, on Peas Hill, to create ribs to fire your tastebuds into action on Friday, 24 August, from 6pm.
There’s also a DJ spinning tunes in the garden too.

5. Summer Saturday
The Vamps (above) are one of the biggest bands on the British scene and round off Newmarket Racecourse’s Summer Saturday, after an afternoon of racing. Their latest album, Night and Day, went into the Top Ten on the iTunes chart in more than 20 countries, not to mention No 1 in the UK, while the first single from it, All Night, went into the Top 25 in the world on Spotify.
They’ll be on stage around 20 minutes after the last race, which is scheduled for 5.45pm. Children aged 15 and under are free, but must be registered when adults book. Tickets from £25 depending on where you watch the action.
