Dive into the Cambridge Film Festival Young Talent Programme, from opportunities for aspiring critics to internships for budding programmers
Cambridge is undoubtedly a cinematic city – its picturesque surrounds being the set for movies past and present, as well as a stomping ground for famed and future filmmakers. The region’s reputation as a filmic hub, however, has been cemented year on year by Cambridge Film Festival, founded in 1977.
The week-long event does not only boast a wealth of screenings and talks for filmgoers – something to spark the interest of those of all ages – but has lots on offer for young film fanatics especially. The CFF Young Talent Programme encompasses the online initiative Youth Lab, a series of screenings, workshops and networking events aiming to boost film literacy and critical skills – perfect for anyone hoping to break into the industry.
Open to young people aged 16-24, Cambridge Film Festival harnesses its iron-strong ties to industry professionals and institutions to craft screenings introduced by the likes of Mark Kermode and Anna Smith and create workshops steered by esteemed guests such as Andrew Collins from the Radio Times, Simran Hans at The Observer and an array of film experts.
Running fortnightly, Youth Lab has been pioneered by Abby Pollock since 2021, also submissions coordinator and shorts programmer for the festival. Abby herself started working for the festival while studying at Anglia Ruskin University, meaning she is more than well-placed to nurture a community of young film buffs hoping to make their way into the industry.
The initiative has also heralded the new Young People’s Jury Award as part of the festival in October. Youth Lab members are called on to flex their skills learnt during the year, including film criticism, to select one winning film from an eligible shortlist. Last year, Henry Blake’s County Lines nabbed the top spot – we’ll have to wait until October to find out what this year’s prize holds.
Youth Lab entices a talented bunch of filmmakers, critics and more to take part, with some spaces – though sought after – still remaining. To get involved and for further information, contact [email protected].
